Abhishek Poddar (born 1968), an Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and art collector, is the founder of the Museum of Art and Photography, Bengaluru.[7] Besides serving on various boards and committees in India, Poddar also serves on the advisory committees of the India-Europe Foundation for New Dialogues, headquartered in Rome and on the Lincoln Centre Global Advisory Council. He has been collecting art since high school and has created a significant collection of South Asian art, craft and antiquities, including modern and contemporary art and photography, a majority of which he has donated to the museum’s collection.[8] In December 2016, Christie’s also held an auction of a large chunk of the Poddar family’s personal collection,[9] and the funds acquired were used to drive forward his vision of establishing south India’s first major private art museum.

Seven storeys high, including a rooftop sculpture that frames Bangalore’s skyline and an adjacent dining room featuring a massive watercolour by Kodanda Rao Teppala, a Smoor cafe in the basement, an auditorium, a conservation room, and a library, the building itself is beautifully spacious—a welcome change from matchbox monotony. The glass facade sports diachronic film which paints the city in shifting hues of yellow, pink and purple as you move to different perspectives.

A particular highlight is the permanent exhibition on the fourth floor titled VISIBLE/INVISIBLE, featuring work by luminaries like Jamini Roy, Bhupen Khakhar, Mrinalini Mukherjee, Ravinder Reddy, Arpita Singh and M.F. Husain. Across time periods and mediums (from kantha stitch embroidery in West Bengal to photographic portraits such as Anoli Perera’s mesmerising ‘I let my hair loose’ series), the show brings to the surface the disconnect and meanings between the ways in which women have been depicted by the Museum of Art & Photography’s collection (mostly by men) and how they portray themselves or participate in the world.

“With this exhibit, we really wanted to make something that was useful and relevant to the community,” says Director Kamini Sawhney, who curated the show alongside the curatorial team comprising Arnika Ahldag, Vaishnavi Kambadur, Riya Kumar and Arshad Hakim. The making of the Museum of Art & Photography in Bengaluru took six years, much of it during the pandemic, over which Indian women’s participation in the labour force and girls’ enrolment in education dropped precipitously. When curating this exhibit, the question of where hyper-visible yet invisible women went anchored the selection of pieces and underscores how they are in conversation with each other. In a section of the show that looks at violence in the home, Jaya Ganguly’s vividly ferocious watercolour sits beside Arpita Singh’s where the only hint of violence in the blue-tiled, grey-toned kitchen is an unobtrusive gun at one side, peeking into the frame like a kettle.
